The Chapel of St Aidan was set up in the baptistery of St Oswald’s Church
in January 2017 as a place of prayer and reflection:
Welcome to the Chapel of St Aidan. Above you is the West facing window dedicated to Aidan (d.651AD) who was an Irish monk and missionary credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria. He founded a monastic cathedral on the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), served as its first bishop, and travelled ceaselessly throughout the countryside spreading the gospel to both the Anglo-Saxon nobility and to the socially disenfranchised.
The following is the Prayer of St Aidan:
Leave me alone with God as much as may be.
As the tide draws the waters close in upon the shore,
make me an island, set apart,
alone with you, God, holy to you.
Then with the turning of the tide
prepare me to carry your presence to the busy world beyond,
the world that rushes in on me
till the waters come again and fold me back to you.
This is a place of prayer; a place where we can be with God and offer up to Him our most intimate thoughts and petitions. It is also a place where we remember the needs of others, just as Aidan did as he worked tirelessly for God all those years ago.
If you feel that you would like to offer up a prayer to God and would like to place it upon the Prayer Tree, then please do so. The prayers will remain in place for two weeks, during which time this worshipping community will remember all prayers offered.

May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
